About

Hi, I'm Tristan, and I'm a nerd about using yarn for fly tying.

I'm not a fly tying expert. I haven't been doing it for decades. In fact, I'm a relative newcomer to fly tying, and I consider myself a mediocre fly tier. But I fish a lot, and I fish a lot with my yarn flies, and I catch a lot of fish with my yarn flies. That's the great thing about using yarn as a fly tying material—you don't have to be Da Vinci at the vise to make flies that catch fish. Yarn is an inexpensive material that is easy (and fun!) to work with in addition to being devastatingly effective.

I started FlyTyingYarn.com because I saw a need. What I wanted didn't already exist. To put a finer point on it, here's what I wanted:

1. A huge variety of yarns at an affordable price.
2. Tons of detail about each yarn (photos, unique descriptions, comparisons, etc.).
3. Useful packaging. I wanted the yarn to be easily storable at my fly tying desk.
4. A one-stop shop for information about lots of different yarn-based flies to tie.

So that's what I set out to create with FlyTyingYarn.com. My wife, Cassie, helps me run the store, pack and ship orders, and answer emails.

I'm an active tenkara angler. Tenkara is a simple method of Japanese fly fishing. I live in eastern Idaho and love finding new little mountain streams in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and beyond. I also happen to make videos about those fishing adventures on my YouTube channel Tenkara Addict. If you want to see me tie some of the flies that I use to catch the fish on that channel, be sure to check out the FlyTyingYarn.com channel. And if you still haven't had enough of me, I make car camping adventure videos on my biggest channel, SUV RVing.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by, and let me know if you have any questions. It'll be either me or Cassie that responds to your email. We appreciate your business.
